Anger and Revolutionary Justice

May 16, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

$10

Martha C. Nussbaum

“Anger is not just ubiquitous, it is also popular.”

When we are offended, anger is often the “first responder” we summon from our array of emotional responses. Can anger be a noble response or is it a human failure, a disease that deforms all our interactions?

Drawing upon the lessons we can learn from Gandhi, King, and Mandela; Dr. Nussbaum argues that we can and must reorient ourselves from the conceptually confused and dangerous mindset that too readily embraces anger and retribution.

Join us for this intriguing exploration of anger and justice as they are made manifest in our personal, social, and political encounters.

Currently at the University of Chicago, Martha C. Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics, appointed in the Law School and Philosophy Department. She is an Associate in the Classics Department, the Divinity School, and the Political Science Department, a Member of the Committee on Southern Asian Studies, and a Board Member of the Human Rights Program. She has published twenty-four books and over five hundred papers addressing: emotions in criminal law, animal rights, disability, religious intolerance, and the importance of overcoming the politics of fear.

In addition to receiving honorary degrees from fifty-six colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe, Martha Nussbaum was recently awarded the prestigious Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy.

She received her B.A. from New York University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard. She has taught at Harvard University, Brown University, and Oxford University.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for appetizers and refreshments. Copies of Martha Nussbaum’s book, Anger and Forgiveness: Resentment, Generosity, Justice will be available for purchase before and after the lecture.
