Chicago Jews for Refugees Assembly
October 28, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
FreeAfter eighteen months of attacks on the U.S. refugee and asylum program, the number of refugees entering the country has dramatically slowed and asylum seeking families have been torn apart at our southern border. At a time of unprecedented global need, the U.S. is failing to meet a basic obligation to victims of war, terror, torture, and persecution. In this period of crisis, it is essential for the Jewish community to demonstrate our support for the safety and dignity of refugees and asylum seekers. The Jews for Refugees Assembly will take place after the announcement of the refugee admissions ceiling for federal fiscal year 2019, but before the 2018 midterm elections. It is the perfect moment to raise our collective voices in a call to action.
The event is intended both to send a strong message to elected officials and the general public about our obligation to welcome the stranger, as well as to connect the network of Jewish community members and organizations who are committed to taking action for refugees and asylum seekers.
The Assembly will feature elected officials, refugee speakers, policy experts, and community leaders. It will bring together the greater Chicago Jewish community, including delegations from congregations and organizations. Together, we will demonstrate the Jewish community’s deep and broad support for refugees and asylum seekers and our commitment to fight every attempt to prevent them from finding safety and welcome in our country.
The speaking program will begin at 2:00PM, followed at 3:00PM by an information and action fair where participants can connect with volunteer opportunities, advocacy initiatives, and other ways to take action.
Convened by HIAS in partnership with Jewish Child & Family Services of Chicago and a planning committee representing twelve Chicago area congregations.
