Sundays at Catholic Theological Union, “Witness to Manzanar”
June 4, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Maryknoll Sister Jaruko Doi will offer a deeply personal reflection on the contemporary significance of the forced removal and internment U.S. citizens of Japanese heritage during World War II. This experience lives on, not only among generations of Japanese-Americans who, like Jaruko, carry the legacy of their families’ unjust incarceration, but also in the fabric of our American culture in ways that continue to marginalize minority communities and threaten those perceived as “outsiders”. And she will share how this experience continues to inform her life and vocation as a Maryknoll Sister.
Afterward, Maryknoll Deacon Daniel Kim, who will be ordained to the priesthood at Maryknoll, NY, on Saturday, May 20th, will celebrate Mass — one of his first such celebrations after ordination. It will be, in a sense, a CTU homecoming for Daniel after his graduation there a year ago.
