Biko, Stephen
Stephen Biko was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s.
He was a student leader and founded the Black Consciousness Movement which empowered and mobilized much of the urban black population. He died in police custody and has been called a martyr of the anti-apartheid movement. He tried to empower black people through his writings and activism and was famous for the slogan “black is beautiful.”
