Microfinance is a category of financial services targeting individuals and small businesses who lack access to conventional banking and related services. Microfinance includes microcredit, the provision of small loans to poor clients; savings and checking accountsmicroinsurance; and payment systems, among other services.[1][2] Microfinance services are designed to reach excluded customers, usually poorer population segments, possibly socially marginalized, or geographically more isolated, and to help them become self-sufficient.


Microfinance is often applied in developing nations as a means of boosting local economies, with hopes of growing the global market.

There are 2 billion people around the world who do not have a bank account, or lack the technology they need to access a financial institution, over 50% of which cite that their primary reason for not having a bank account is not having enough money.

The microfinance industry utilizes a banking service that is called “microcredit.” It provides small loans to low-income individuals or those who are unemployed, a niche of the population that would normally not have access to any type of financial service. In developed nations, microloans to this sector can be as high as $25,000.

When most think about the microfinance industry, however, it involves loans to individuals with limited resources. It provides people who work hard, but earn the equivalent of $2 per day or less, to borrow, save, create equity, pay debt, or maintain insurance for their own small business. Most microfinance industry institutions focus on women-led businesses in the developing world.

Microfinance Industry Trends and Analysis

The microfinance industry will continue to grow, even as infrastructure around the world’s poor continues to grow and improve. About one-third of total clients are served right now because there are so many infrastructure gaps in place. That means there are 400 million people right now who qualify for microcredit, though they cannot receive it because there is no way to get funds to them.

At the same time, there are another 2.4 billion people who may benefit from what the microfinance industry offers and have no way to put that funding to use.

The success stories of the microfinance industry can be quite compelling. Giving people the opportunity to work hard with reasonable resources so they can change their lives is what this industry provides. With so many people still waiting for this opportunity, the microfinance sector will look to continue growing in the years and decades to come.

Savings are vital to build the resilience of families living in poverty, helping them to manage disasters and unexpected events and enable families to cope with irregular incomes, a common problem in agricultural communities. Without reserves, families may not be able to pay for basic necessities for extended periods. Access to a safe place to save (for individuals and saving groups) reduces vulnerability and builds resilience.

Insurance products enable clients to guard against the failure of their crop through lack of rain or natural disaster. Health insurance helps provide funds when a member of the family is sick or dies.

Education and training on financial literacy (debt management, cash flow and budgeting, and consumer protection), empowerment and social emphasis can improve the effectiveness of financial services and, consequently, increase their impact on children.

Microfinance institutions generally agree that women should be the primary focus of service delivery. Evidence shows that they are less likely to default on their loans than men.


Microfinance Examples

One example of a microfinance project is exemplified in the slums of the south-eastern city of Vijayawada, India. This project functions as an unofficial banking system where money is collected from slum dwellers, mostly women, in order for them to accumulate savings. This project has many benefits, such as empowering women and giving parents the ability to save money for their children’s education but there is a risk of entrusting their savings to unlicensed, informal collectors but the slum dwellers are willing to accept this risk because they are unable to save at home, and unable to use the remote and unfriendly banks in their country.

Another example is in Nairobi, Kenya where a small group of women save their money every 15 days so there would be a lump sum that 1 of the group would receive. At the end of the 15 days a new cycle would start. There are no interest rates and everyone receives back what they put forth. This initiative requires trust and social capital networks in order to work, so this type of arrangement includes people who know each other and have reciprocity. This practice allows for marginalized groups to receive a lump sum at one time in order to pay or save for specific needs they have.
