The Church’s Role in the Struggle Against Metallic Mining in El Salvador

April 4, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Featuring Andrew McKinley (Central American University, San Salvador) who will address the work of mercy known as “admonishing the sinner” as it relates to the fight against metal mining in El Salvador:

In March 2017, El Salvador became the first country in the world to ban metal mining, safeguarding its natural resources and its people’s health. Leading the push for this law was the Catholic Church, and key to the effort was Andrew McKinley, a specialist in mining and water at San Salvador’s Central American University (UCA). In this talk, he describes the devastating environmental effects of metal mining and the strategies that led to the 2017 passage of the anti-mining ban.

About the Speaker
Andrew McKinley was born in the United States but has lived most of his life in the developing world. He has resided in Central America since 1977, focusing his work on issues related to social justice, human rights, and sustainable development. He has a master’s in health administration and works as a specialist in mining and water at the Jesuit institution, Central American José Simeón Cañas University (UCA), in San Salvador. He is the co-author of the 2018 book (published in Spanish), The Water Crisis in El Salvador: Facts and Challenges.
