Human Fraternity: Implications of a Ground-Breaking Document for Christian-Muslim Relations
On February 4, 2019 / 29 Jumada 1 1440, Pope Francis and Shaykh al-Azhar Ahmed el-Tayeb made history in Abu Dhabi. They signed the first recorded joint statement between a Roman Pontiff and the Shaykh al-Azhar, one of the oldest and most revered institutions of Muslim religious learning. The document, Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, offers itself both as “a guide for future generations to advance a culture of mutual respect in the awareness of the great divine grace that makes all human beings brothers and sisters” and an “object of reflection” among all those committed “to be defenders everywhere of the rights of the oppressed and of the least of our brothers and sisters.” Please join us for an evening where leaders of the National Catholic-Muslim Dialogue heed the call of the document and engage in reflection on its challenging content.
