Fr. Patrick Devine, a missionary and social entrepreneur, gives this second talk in CWCIT’s new Spiritual Works of Mercy Series on peace and reconciliation in Eastern Africa. This region of the world is increasingly plagued by religious ideological extremism, which generates a hostile cultural environment that suffocates tolerance, freedom, mercy, and reconciliation. To create and implement conflict management and peacemaking policies, it’s critical to have a comprehensive knowledge of the continuum of conflict/peace, tolerance/intolerance, and more. Fr. Devine explores these topics, drawing on the work of the Shalom Centre for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation, which he founded in Eastern Africa.

About the Speaker
Fr. Patrick Devine, SMA, PhD, is the founder and international chair of the Shalom Center for Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation (SCCRR), an interreligious organization pioneering conflict resolution and development work in strife-ridden areas of Eastern Africa. For his work, he has received the 2013 International Caring Award, succeeding the Dalai Lama, and was also recently nominated for the Tipperary International Peace Award. Fr. Devine holds an MA in Peace Studies & International Relations (Hekima University College) and a PhD in Political Science & Public Administration (University of Nairobi).
